What started back in 2014 as a initiative promoted mainly by small olive growers and transforming / packaging industries today is a solvent and inclusive project.
And the road has not been easy, since it was necessary to deal with the Asemesa's initial opposition, the Spanish Association of Exporters and Industrialists of Table Olives. However, having overcome this obstacle after reach an agreement in June 2016 with the Agro Sevilla cooperative (the largest exporter of olives in Spain and which holds a vice presidency at Asemesa) the project was gaining muscle and achieving milestones, such as the Concession of the Temporary National Protection to the PGI Aceituna Manzanilla and Gordal de Sevilla in mid-October 2018 or the constitution of Regulatory Council at the beginning of 2019.
Currently, the Council has more than 3,500 olive growers, 18 processing industries, 16 purchasing centers and 11 registered packaging companies. In addition, in the last plenary session, held on July 15, the registrations of two new renowned dressing industries such as Agromairena and Guadalquivir Olives and two new packaging-marketers have been approved: Guadalquivir SL and Ángel Camacho Olives Food. Therefore, the large firms of table olives are incorporated into the figure of the Protected Geographical Indication.
Commercialization
The first Sevillian olives certified with the PGI quality mark are now available to the consumer. The Carrefour center in San Juan de Aznalfarache has been the first distribution chain of table olives covered by these PGIs, being the Aljarafe company Olivaida SL, with its brand La Sabrosita, the first bottling company to position its range of products with the Manzanilla de Sevilla olive PGI in this distribution chain.
The presentation of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) for Manzanilla and Gordal olives from Seville in the distribution sector was attended by the President of the Regulatory Council, Juan Luis Oropesa; the manager of the company Olivaida SL, Francisco Javier Rodriguez; and the institutional manager of Carrefour, Manuel Torreglosa, who have made known to the attendees and consumers the characteristics and added values of the Sevillian Manzanilla and Gordal olives that carry these distinctive quality marks, as well as the guarantee of origin they offer.
After the premiere of Olivaida SL, Manzanilla Olive SCA and Escamilla SL will be the next to be packed and commercialize olives with the aforementioned Manzanilla and Gordal de Sevilla Olives PGI, betting on the guarantee of the origin, quality, tradition and reputation of its Sevillian table olives.
Duty
The Plenary of the Regulatory Council has unanimously approved an institutional declaration in support for the declarations of the Platform Against Tariffs, to which it has requested to join, in order to demand that the European Commission take compensatory measures for our country, as one of the most affected by the tariffs imposed on Spanish olives in U.S.
The Regulatory Council insists that Green olives have already supported a tariff of 25% since October 2019 and that the North American Government you can increase this percentage in August up to 100% and extend it, with identical figures, to black olives, which would aggravate the dramatic situation not only in the export sector, but also in the entire national table olive sector.
And they are at stake, according to some estimates, 100,000 tons of olives and 35,000 hectares of olive groves, which would mean that approximately 7,000 olive farmers would be unable to sell their olives.
